Authority Baked Chicken

The brand name Authority which is the brand name food from PetSmart performs pretty well when you compare it to other pet foods on the market. Looking at the ingredients you note there is not the usual chicken innards and cow brains which they like to call protein.  It actually has chicken as it main source of protein. Labeling of pet foods is described here.

Most times when you look at a label you notice certain things are missing which is a good sign as I mentioned. The meat source of this food is good, The next two ingredients based on weight is wheat and barley.  After that there is again more animal protein in the form of chicken meal.  There is also Salmon added and flax-seed which have beneficial fatty acids. There are also a number of other additions to the food being spinach, carrots, broccoli and cranberries.

Overall this is a great pet food except that based on weight, wheat is next which does have a history of causing allergic reactions in dogs and anal itching which sees them dragging their backside over the lawn in your backyard.

This is an excellent product but if your animal already suffers from allergic reactions then consider another food with less wheat in the diet. Wheat is a filler and should not be one of the primary ingredients in your pet food. Animals are like humans, each has its own issues as there is no standard dog or cat.

Good Points

The use of wheat are the next primary ingredient is not good however the balance of animal proteins is excellent. Chicken is the primary ingredient and based on weight chicken meal has been added as the 4th ingredient and salmon mean as the 7th in the list. Barley is a good grain and so is the addition of flax seed.
