Weimaraners are a high energy and highly driven breed of dog. As puppies, you don’t want them to grow too fast so a basic puppy food from Purina is best. The are prone to hip dysplasia so growing too fast could be an issue. It’s always best to check with your vet first, but a high quality puppy food for large breed dogs would be best. Purina puppy chow fits that description.
My Weimaraner was very active as a puppy. She was very strong willed and determined. She would sleep for a few hours per day like mini naps and then wake up and be ready to run. We had her in an apartment in the beginning, but Weimaraners shouldn’t be raised in an apartment unless you are able to give them plenty of exercise. If you work during the day and have them in side for 8 hours at a time this will not work well for them. They need a doggie door and they need to be able to play outside. Your dog will destroy your home if you let her loose for 8 hours per day. They have so much built up energy and drive that they don’t know what else to do. I can guarantee you that you will think you have a poorly disciplined dog, but discipline isn’t the issue. The issue is an energy issue. Weims are hunting dogs with high drive. They need the exercise. Purina dog food or any other type of dog food is not going to help with these energy issues.
Weims also have separation anxiety so having one alone for hours at a time is not a good idea. Once again, the dog food you choose will not help in this situation. The best thing to do is either spend more time with your Weim or get her a playmate. They usually do well with other dogs present. If you do have more than one dog then I recommend for you to buy your dog food in bulk, in the large bags. Purina has these or you can even order them from amazon or one of the dog food shipping sites online. Once again, having two dogs in an apartment, especially two high energy dogs is a bad idea and you’ll end up paying for that apartment when you move out.
At the end of the day, a Weimaraner is a great dog and they are one of the most intelligent breeds out there. You will feel like you are with another human with they way they look at you and understand you with those curious and intelligent eyes. If you don’t want to go through the destructive puppy phase, then I would recommend that you visit a weim rescue or shelter and get an adult dog who has already had some training and experience. She will also understand that you rescued her and will be appreciative. This can form an even more stronger bond between the animal and owner. Older dogs require adult or senior dog food and Purina dog food can fit your needs for that as well, and with any of the brands.
